Wind Power Installation

Overview
*   Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy found naturally in the wind into mechanical energy which powers a generator to produce electricity.
*   For domestic use, small systems known as “micro-wind” can be installed to produce electricity to power lights and household appliances.
*   This compliments solar panels as wind power is most effective in the winter whereas the solar panels work best in summer.
*   Eco-friendly: no pollutants are released from wind turbines and as wind is free once installed there are no running costs!
*   Average household can save up to £380 off annual electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions by 2.6 tonnes.

Product

*   There are 2 types or turbine, Mast and Roof Mounted. Mast mounted are free standing and are erected in a suitably exposed position, often around 2.5kW to 6kW. Roof mounted can be installed on a roof.Often these are around 1kW to 2kW in size.
*   The ideal environment for small domestic wind turbines work best is exposed locations with windspeed greater than 5m/s

Cost and Saving

*   Costs for a roof mounted microwind system start at about £1,500
*   Larger mast mounted systems cost between £11,000 and £19,000, including installation
*   Average household can save up to £380 off annual electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions by 2.6 tonnes.

Planning and Grants

*   Small domestic wind systems normally do require permission from your local authority, Echome will check before you install a system.
*   Find a grant to help with the costs of installing renewable and low carbon technologies - visit the DECC-funded Low Carbon Buildings Programme
